I’ll listen to 2 Live Crew all day long. But this new shit takes vile to a whole new level. Like 2lc wasn’t even that horribly gross.

Kinja'd!!!

If Bob Martinez was still in office, he’d have a stroke probably after hearing some of this new stuff.

As an avid Hip-hop fan, I’m going to disagree. You got Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Action Bronson, Killer Mike ( & Run The Jewels), Logic, Lupe Fiasco, Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Chance The Rapper, Joey Bada$$, Common, I could go on forever.

If anything, hip hop is coming out of a slump right now. Anyone who says hip hop is dead obviously doesn’t know much about the genre.

I think it peaked in the late 90’s, early 2000’s. I agree most of the radio rap is just fucking garbage these days, but there is still a couple of rappers out there worth checking out. Mentioned all up in the comments here.

But yeah, fuck Nicki Minaj, how does anyone even listen to that shit?

Your point? Music, including rap has done this for ages. People mistake Nostalgia for superiority.

That image is cancer because it selectivley chooses verses and then compares them to choruses.

Songs from 2015/2014:

Wesley’s Theory (Kendrick Lamar)

What you want you? A house or a car?
Forty acres and a mule, a piano, a guitar? Anything, see, my name is Uncle Sam, I’m your dog
Motherfucker you can live at the mall
I know your kind (That’s why I’m kind)
Don’t have receipts (Oh man, that’s fine) Pay me later, wear those gators Cliché and say, fuck your haters I can see the borrow in you
I can see the dollar in you
Little white lies, but it’s no white-collar in you

Body Of Work (Lupe Fiasco):

From the guts of the mother, Kambucha move her undercover With a $3,000 son she just want a lover And somebody else to come and try and drug her Take her off the grill, she done Pills celebrating, “we won” In the system of the women, never knew he had it in him This condition when the world that they make him become
Cocaine and new high tech ways, smuggle whole things
(I’ve always loved you) From the control range that make radio heads with gold brains

I could go on forever, but don’t just judge everything from some Radio hits.

People praise Baby Got Back but insult Anaconda. They are literally two songs about asses.

Rap in the 90s was just as bad. Bitches Ain’t Shit by Snoop Dogg? Ambitonz As A Ridah by 2Pac? Hypnotize, Fuck You Tonight, Warning by Biggie? Literally every song by Warren G has some sort of Marijuana reference. A Bitch Is A Bitch by NWA? Straight Outta Compton? Ain’t Nuthing But a G thang?

Agreed 1990-1995 were some of the best years for hip hop. It got hilariously lewd in the early 2000’s for some reason though haha.

IMO, it 2pac was still around he’d be disappointing with that happened. Like I mean...............

That’s not even music......

Agreed, I have no idea how anybody tolerates Nicki Minaj. That “music” is really just ass that’s been recorded.

Pretty sure 2Pac would be fine with how music is going. Kendrick Lamar is often compared to 2Pac for his lyrical diversity and how it is heavily Poetic. His new Album is a prime example of it.

Take Me Away by Big Sean is an interlude. Dr. Dre, if you want to compare, literally has him having sex with a “patient” as an Interlude in The Chronic.

Whatever man, you just old and shit.

Rap is as it always has been. Fresh hits popping off for people to groove to. If anything the new shit is better simple because the producers have better technique and the ability to make literally anything sound good with autotuning and other magic tricks.

Anaconda is exactly the same song as Baby Got Back.

Also that point makes no sense, that goes for any song ever. Something had to exist for something else to exist.

That’s like saying “If humans didn’t exist, none of the current shit would either”

The entire genre of rap and hip-hop, from Day 1, has used instrumentals from Jazz, Blues, and other types of music.

There are tons that aren’t Stereotypes. To be completely clear, Radio music has always been awful. in the 80s and 90s, they played whatever was upbeat and happy and was fun music. They didn’t play thinking music or interesting music.

It has always been like that. Changes is Tupac’s Biggest Hit. It’s also probably his least thought provoking song.

California Luv is up there too, that’s even worse.

I gave an entire list of mainstream big rap hits from the 90s, and they are all FUCK FUCK KILL KILL MONEY BITCHES.

Mainstream rap music was always mainly about dick measuring until Kanye came along with Jesus Walks. Ironically, Kanye ended up becoming the one with the biggest ego. Point is, Music always has been and will always be shitty, your always going to have to find good and bad. The sound has changed but the quality and lyrical content hasn’t. Anaconda is a fantastic example. I don’t even like Anaconda, but it’s a song about Asses. So is Baby Got Back. Your not supposed to find some deeper meaning and lyrical gold in a song about Asses.

I disagree with your assessment of the current state of the Rap genre. I think that contrary to your premise that the music is worse than in years past, it’s actually better, when measured on technical artistry and the ability of rap music makers to deliver a danceable beat that has a solid rythm.

I think your incorrect assessment stems from nostalgia and an inability to appreciate new innovation in the genre. Most likely stemming from age.

There, does that help?

Seriously though, at first I had some issue with new Southern mumbly shit, and I still think Rae Smmurd is some fake ass hipster boy band crap. But overall the stuff sounds good if you let go of your biases.

It may help if you realise that I generally don’t really like the more cerebral or political rap. I know people like them, but I think it’s just boring and doesn’t work for me. I like rap as stuff to dance to. And if I can’t dance, if it doesn’t inspire movement and passion, I don’t really think it’s good.

And the new stuff does that, and in spades. Much better, if we’re being honest, than the club stuff from the early nineties.
